I had a short discussion with a cyclist, who was traveling southbound on Fayerweather and turned left at the red light onto Brattle.

I was able to get her to stop and explained that that was dangerous and illegal and after she called me a few choice words, she said the word on the Cambridge cyclist social media platforms are saying that this sign allows cyclists to turn left on red because it says no turn on red except for bicycles.

This is really dangerous eastbound traffic from Brattle turning left onto North bound Fayerweather could easily be hit by a bicycle turning left, going the opposite direction on a red light.

Can we get this signed changed either to say no turn on red for all vehicles or no right turn on red.

Cambridge, please fully describe the left turn on red: for cars, the car must stop first and then turn after green lighted traffic passes. Is this true for bicycles too? (I think yes!)

Two way bike traffic on one side of the street is inherently unsafe going through intersections with all two way traffic. Complicated traffic signs will not help. Safer for bicycles and pedestrians before this bike lane installed.

Thanks for your report. No road user is allowed to turn left on red (regardless of any No Turn on Red signs) unless the approach they are coming from, and the street they are turning on to, are both one-ways and they have yielded to cross traffic, and there is not a No Turn on Red regulation posted. Cyclists are allowed to turn right on red at this intersection after they have yielding to anyone in the crosswalk and/or any cross traffic. We will not be changing this sign at this time but we will continue to monitor this intersection for safety improvements.

More public discussion of the rules would inform us for more safety on the road. Thank you for the in-depth statement about turns on red. The bicyclist reported in this SCS broke a number of road rules: turning left from a two way street into a two way street, not stopping before making the turn—required of cars—and, failing to yield to cross traffic. (By-the-way, pedestrians have a ‘desire-line’ which attracts them to jay walk; and bicyclists have a ‘momentum desire’, not to give it up. In both cases, people are at risk.

Heavens forbid, a bicyclist “broke a number of rules”. Seems rules do not apply to bicyclists, from my daily observations of bicyclists on Cambridge.
