On the Walden St side of 221 Fayerweather, there is a pile of asphalt on the sidewalk, curb, and street. Maybe it was used as a makeshift ramp and left behind?

*Love* the new protected intersection on the NE corner of Broadway and Galileo Galilei by the Akamai building, and I'm excited about the plans for the entire intersection to eventually get this treatment.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to make a slight change to the timing of the bicycle traffic signal for cyclists continuing on Broadway from Kendall Square to the NW. Currently, pedestrians get the LPI a few seconds ahead of both motorist and cyclist signals going green. However, it would be really nice if the cyclist traffic signal could also turn green with the LPI because 1) it will make cyclists more visible to motorists as they cross the intersection and 2) cyclists are already using the LPI to begin crossing anyway, and not waiting for the bike traffic signal.

    Thanks for looking into this.

This is a medium-term request, not an immediate problem. Not sure if this should be directed to Stephen, Patrick, or someone else.

It would be great if there could be a bicycle loop detector installed for the left turn from southbound Mass Ave to eastbound Vassar St. I didn't know the left turn signal was based on a vehicle loop detector at all - I assumed the left turn arrow came on in every cycle. But this morning I was on my bike and the only person attempting a left onto Vassar, and the green left arrow never activated. I know that a bicycle loop is not really part of the South Mass Ave quick build improvements, but it seems like a reasonable medium-term project.

Alternatively, for those who aren't comfortable taking the lane on a bike, it would be great if we could find a way to squeeze a left-turn bike box for cyclists to make that turn from Mass Ave to Vassar toward Kendall Square. Not sure if there is space for that, though. Thanks!

  • 725 Concord Ave Cambridge 02138, United States - Cambridge

Virtually the entire separated sidewalk-level bike lane on Concord Ave (westbound) from Trader Joe’s to the Belmont Line is uncleared - I’m honestly blown away that this hasn’t been taken care of yet given the length of uncleared lane and that otherwise cyclists are forced into traffic on a busy road.

Haven’t been on the eastbound side yet, but I will have a look soon.

One of the new vertical delineators (flexposts) in the new separated bike lane on Ames St is missing. It’s essential that this gets replaced quickly because of the high demand for TNCs and other passenger vehicles loading/unloading here. Last night I saw a Lyft in this bike lane here while leaving work.

This dump truck from Gioiso and Sons was driving dangerously and recklessly on Mass Ave during the morning commute. I took this photo moments after:
    - it very closely passed me and another cyclist on Mass Ave (southbound) near Ellery St, even though there was no oncoming traffic and ample room for the truck to move over and around us
    - a cyclist further ahead of us and the tuck, with a child seat mounted on the rear of her bike, used her arm to clearly signal she was moving left in the southbound lane and was going to make a left turn. The truck nearly rear ended her despite ample warning and then continued to tailgate her until she made her left

The truck has a commercial MA plate H24627. Please get trucks like this off the road before another cyclist or pedestrian is needlessly killed.

Many of the bike racks in front of Legal Seafoods and Clover on Main St have these signs on them - the signs have been there for at least a month. They have the City of Cambridge seal on them but look non-standard and have a really non-specific days-of-the-week date range on them.

What’s the deal with these signs? Are they current/active? Given the demand for bike parking in this area, it would help to remove them if they are out of date, or at least be more specific for when a bike parking ban is in effect.

Pretty confusing to have an automatic pedestrian crossing and a beg-button at the same corner, especially if you cross on the automatic leg first, you wouldn’t expect to have to ask to cross the other leg. Also, the beg-button sign is defaced.

18 Copley St Cambridge 02138 United States - Neighborhood 9
Earlier I posted here about how the contractors at 18 Copley were creating huge dust clouds spreading from a dumpster in the driveway across the sidewalk, with no mitigation (issue #7059439). Tonight they have all of their trash and recycling bins out, and before I took this picture one was completely blocking the sidewalk before I moved it (collection day was Wednesday because of the snow). They also did not clear their sidewalk of ice until today. Can someone with the City set them straight? Gut jobs happen here all the time, but I’ve never seen one done so poorly like this.
  • 18 Copley St Cambridge 02138 United States - Neighborhood 9

18 Copley St was recently sold and is now being gutted. There is a huge dumpster in the driveway. That’s fine. However, this morning as I walked by on the sidewalk, I had to walk through a huge thick cloud of dust to walk past the house, because someone was working in the dumpster with a pickaxe or shovel, smacking away at stuff. He was wearing a dust mask. If he’s wearing a dust mask, what’s in the dumpster? What’s in the dust? Given the age of the house, it’s not hard to imagine there is at least lead in there. Shouldn’t there be some sort of remediation to protect people walking by?

(Also, whoever’s in charge of the house has still not cleared the sidewalk of ice and snow, especially in front of the driveway).

  • 435 Massachusetts Avenue Cambridge, MA, 02139, USA - The Port

There is a large sinkhole in a relatively new contractor patch located in the temporary bike lane alongside the jersey barriers on Mass Ave adjacent to the large construction site (just south of McDonalds). This sinkhole/pothole is a big problem because it is almost impossible for cyclists to avoid, forcing them to either swerve into the motorist travel lane, or go through a huge hole while sandwiched between vehicles and the jersey barriers.

I posted this once under the "pothole" category over a month ago (https://seeclickfix.com/issues/6637191-pothole) with no city response, which is an unusually long amount of time relative to how quickly other potholes I've mentioned are fixed, and how dangerous/uncomfortable this pothole is. I'm trying now under "construction complaint" because this is definitely the result of the recent construction and a poor patch job.

Thank you for looking into this.

  • Clark St & Hampshire St Cambridge, MA, 02139, USA - The Port

I know that pavement marking season is winding down with the cold weather, so consider this a request for next spring. Could the bike lanes on Hampshire Street get some more high-viz green markings at cross streets, especially unsignalized ones like Clark St.? In the mornings, eastbound traffic can back up from the traffic signal at Portland past Clark. Clark is one-way to the south, so it collects some people trying to access Kendall or Central from the northeast. Altogether, it results in motorists driving across Hampshire, through a lane of backed up traffic (providing the box is not blocked), and across the southbound bike lane, which has some dashed lines here but oncoming cyclists are not visible to Clark motorists, and vice versa. High-viz paint would at least better help motorists know to expect cyclists here. I've almost been hit here a few times by motorists trying to quickly get across this intersection through a gap in the backed up traffic.

Thanks for looking into it. Hope this makes it on the list for next spring.

There are 4-5 concrete sidewalk panels on Sherman St. next to the St. Peter's/Danehy Park baseball field that are heaved by roots; especially between the entrance to the parking lot/DPW barn and the crosswalk to Cadbury Rd. Any chance they could get repaired or replaced?
