There is, but a lot of people are too lazy to bother with it. Residents can pick up vouchers from DPW and take large items like this to the dump. Unfortunately many don't.
FairHavenRes, will they also pick up large (e.g., tree sections) yard waste if you move it to the curb? Can you explain how this works? I'm not excusing the mattress at the curb, but I think a lot of people are unaware of the voucher program. I know I was! Thanks much.
Here's the voucher information: Coupons, allowing New Haven Residents to utilize the Transfer Station’s drop off services for free, are also available at the DPW office. Whether residents schedule a Bulk Appointment or not, they can acquire 4 yard waste coupons (trees, branches, leaves only) and 4 residential waste coupons (tires, metal, electronics) valid for one year. Coupons are redeemable at the Transfer Station where an attendant is on duty to collect them from Monday – Saturday 9:00 am - 12:00 pm.

Yard waste: branches can't exceed 4 ft in length and must in tied in bundles that are 1 foot or less in diameter. (Or you can just pick up voucher booklets and drop the yard waste off yourself.)
Thanks FairHavenRes for sharing information. We are also working with NHPD to help resolve illegal dumping issues. We will pick up mattress when we can. Thanks again
