Bike lanes have been installed without regard to the fact that tour buses are a fact of life on the City's streets. Cambridge is a major tourist destination. Cambridge is also a college town – college students come and go to games and special events. Bus drivers need to be directed to designated stopping areas, including satellite parking. In the absence of stopping places and bus lots, what is the CPD expected to do when a bus stops in a bike lane – arrest the driver? ticket the bus company? ticket the driver? The number of reported cases of bike lane obstruction indicates a systemic problem.
Unsatisfactory response from the CPD. The area shown in the picture is not designated as a shuttle drop off. These are commercial bus tours that should be parking elsewhere if the designated area is already filled. What is the point of having a bike lane?
Per the Police, This area is designated for shuttle drop off and pick up, though we are constantly reminding tour buses of the need to be cognizant of traffic safety. Please contact the Cambridge Police Traffic Unit at 617-349-4365 https://www.cambridgema.gov/cpd/policeunits/operationsdivision/trafficenforcementunit if you wish to follow up further.
